I had the pleasure to work with Cara when we were teaching ESL to adult immigrant learners, planning and designing ESL programs, co-presenting at a state TESOL Conference and collaborating on numerous projects. In the classroom, she is a passionate educator who ignites motivation and fun, overcoming obstacles with her strength and determination. Cara is a skilled and effective communicator. She is fluent in Spanish and her presentation skills and project management abilities are top notch. Likewise, Cara is proficient at using state of the art media; she is tech-savvy and has strong organizational and planning skills. Cara brings best practices of TESOL pedagogy to life with engaging classroom and project activities. She is a very well-organized teacher who balances proven effective methods along with her own creative techniques she designs prolifically, as if by magic. Cara's students learn; they advance. I now teach the high advanced level at SMACE, and I have many of Cara's former students who began with her at the low beginning level. They all say that they owe their English skills to Cara, who taught them how to learn. Cara's tremendous empathy, compassion and energy enabled her to build an ESL program at the local worker center. The legacy of Cara's work lives on, even years after she has moved on to help others find employment and develop their potential. Cara probably doesn't realize how her work has touched and transformed the lives of so many people. She has been more than just a respected and admired colleague. Cara has been my mentor. I began my career as a volunteer ESL instructor where Cara was my supervisor. She encouraged me to try out new ideas in the classroom and modeled what an effective ESL teacher should do. Her classes were always fun and the atmosphere she created was a genuine community. Soon, Cara advised me to pursue my Master's in TESOL and also helped me with my progress toward the State teaching credential. Without Cara's guidance and support, I would not have been able to navigate the process that brought me to my present career. Thanksgiving seems like a good time to express my gratitude to Cara. Speaking of the holidays, if I had to say what kind of tree Cara is,it would be a Christmas tree because she brightens everyone's day. Cara is lit from within with a joy for life and a generous capacity for sharing and caring. Cara lights up the room with her presence and her positive energy. Thank you, Cara!
