Patient navigation is a process by which trained individuals proactively guide patients through and around barriers in the healthcare system. The role of patient navigation is related to three key aspects of cancer care: outreach, patient navigation and rehabilitation. Barriers in cancer care are created and sustained by three factors: poverty, culture and social inequities. I help men understand the pros and cons of Prostate Cancer screening and make sure patients who have a suspicious finding get follow-up care. I identify any barriers or possible barriers for men to receive care, including barriers for timely diagnosis and treatment, I also give help as needed in getting and filling out forms for financial and other types of assistance. Keeping communication open with providers, caregivers, and patients in order to coordinate services within the Arkansas Prostate Cancer Foundation, outside facilities, and within the community is another aspect of my position.
