Squad Leader
-
Oct 2011 - Nov 2012
Shortly after being promoted to Corporal, I assumed the command of mortar and crew while on a training mission in Thailand. As the squad leader, I was in charge of an entire mortar weapon system and four other marines. I was responsible for emplacement, operation, and firing of the weapon as well as the well being and organization of the marines under me. I was often tasked with supervising working parties, delegating tasks, and ensuring the discipline and cleanliness of my marines when not in the field or training. Being an non-commissioned officer improved my leadership capabilities substantially. I found myself having to come up with creative ways to resolve conflict both within my squad and outside it. The morale of the marines under me relied heavily on my attitude and ability to lead by example. As squad leader, it was also my duty to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the members of my squad and conduct monthly counselings with them.

0341 Mortarman
-
Mar 2009 - Oct 2011
As a junior infantry marine, I was engaged in a rigorous training regimen that included various aspects of modern combat, discipline, cleanliness, and drill. I was trained by veteran marines in 1st Battalion 4th Marines who had recently come back from Afghanistan. I specialized in the deployment of the 81mm mortar weapon system, which was my main occupational specialty in the Marine Corps. Being a mortarman involves some mathematics, orienteering, and heavy attention to detail under very strenuous and exhaustive circumstances. The safe and efficient handling of explosives and sensitive equipment was a priority in training.I was also required to be an efficient rifleman which involved training in patrolling, marksmanship, communication, humvee driving, and situation awareness. I cross trained with several different military units across the south pacific, often with a language barrier, including Korean marines, Thai marines, and the Australian army. I was also on the TRAP team (Tactical Recovery of Aircraft and Personnel) which would insert and rescue downed pilots and sensitive equipment in the event of a crash in enemy territory.
