As a vet assistant, I did everything from working up front in reception to working in back with kennel. I assisted the veterinarian in surgery by prepping the patient, monitoring anesthesia, and performing dental prophies. In treatment, I drew blood, administered SQ fluids, performed ear cleanings and nail trims. I worked directly with clients by making appointments, checking them in--which includes asking the owner all the preliminary questions, and checking the appt. out--including any discharge instructions from the veterinarian. Some other duties included taking x-rays and processing them, preparing medication prescribed by the veterinarian, cleaning surgical instruments, and performing some in-house lab work.

I learned a great deal about exotic animals which include birds, small mammals and rodents, and reptiles. Restraint and administration of oral medications and SQ fluids were the tasks I became the most familiar with. I was able to assist in radiography and appointments.
