I work in the Tobin Lab of Disturbance Ecology and Insect Ecology. For my honors senior thesis, I am analyzing the population dynamics of wasps in areas that have been burned by wildfires, as part of a larger project by graduate student Autumn Mast. I analyzed data from trawl surveys and underwater image collections to see where there are high concentrations of Jonah and Atlantic rock crabs along the East Coast of the United States. Using this information, I examined their habitat conditions, such as temperature, depth, and salinity. This work will be used for creating an essential fish habitat report and stock assessment, which are important for these relatively unstudied, but economically important fisheries. I worked jointly with the Seattle Protected Resources Division and the Northwest Fisheries Science Center at NOAA to analyze data and craft policy relating to endangered Southern Resident killer whales. Most of my work involved examining patterns between underwater noise levels and whale foraging behavior and shadowing my mentor on vessel regulation policy.
