'For Colored Girls who have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow is Enuf’ By Ntozake Shange Directed by Tshego Khutsoane Winner of the Standard Bank Ovation Award 2016 Designed by Jade Bowers and Camille Behrens Choreographed by Kieron Jina (National Arts Festival 2016) (UJ Arts Centre 2016) Ntozake Shange’s choreopoem serves to explain the struggles of colored women, from prejudice to domestic violence, harassment and rape. The choreography invited unity. The fact that the women are student performers makes this production of For Colored Girls all the more potent. During our time together I found the cast’s solidarity unyielding and their will unparalleled. Simple white boxes created levels for performers to use. The choreography and gestured performance, along with their ability to make a soundscape, transformed these basic shapes into buses, park benches and beds. The staffs created skeleton structures when assembled by the cast. It is the power of the staff that helped direct power, that aided in the visualisation of penetration and directed blame. 'Boesman and Lena' by Athol Fugard Directed by Phala Ookeditse Designed with Alby Michaels (UJ Arts and Culture) An empty stage for people who are without. During the many evictions in Apartheid, Boesman and Lena try to remember home. They enter the stage with a large bag that unravels into a landscape of old clothes and found objects, burnt and broken. An attached dirty bed sheet is assembled to become a murky sky. While this well-known play is often performed on a bare stage to emphasise the loss and poverty of the characters, Phala Ookeditse Phala's production creates a settlement that shows us the remnants of the characters' lives. 'I, Oedipus' Designed with Catherine Dickinson and Kamini Sooben Facilitated by Sarah Roberts, (Wits School of Arts) Design and Performance students present I, Oedipus (2014) as part of their Research Project 'The Actor and the Mise en Scène.' Directed by Prof. Sarah Roberts, the chorus weaves excerpts from T.S Eliot's The Wasteland within Oedipus Rex. Using shadow, reflection and light, Plato's The Cave supplies a means to represent the paradox of Oedipus. Continuing this paradox, the male performers rotate the role of Oedipus for each performance in the mode of improv. The design had to compliment the dynamic created from having three males of different heights, race and acting abilities. To facilitate improv, the design employed ‘neutral objects’ that could be transformed and manipulated but still convey a specific meaning to the audience.
