Our research explores the economic and social impact of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). To demonstrate anchor institutions' economic and social effects on their communities, we review the role of five HBCUs as anchor institutions. We begin with broadly defining anchor institutions and inclusive growth and, later, use these concepts to measure HBCUs’ impact. We conclude by noting HBCUs’ success as social and economic mobility vehicles — despite facing unique barriers — and offer opportunities for private and public capital to advance their efforts.
