The bulk of my research focused on the design and fabrication of a microchannel recuperator heat exchanger for use in a sCO2 Brayton cycle. I designed and built a test loop to quantify the heat transfer and pressure drop performance of the recuperator using components listed in my resume. This provided extended exposure to equipment calibration, sizing, troubleshooting, and safety considerations as well as experience with independently overseeing a project from its inception to its successful completion. A second avenue of my research focused on the optimization of heat transfer and pressure drop performance in pin-fin microchannel heat sinks. Flow patterns in differing pin geometries were visualized to determine geometric criteria for the onset of vortex shedding– a phenomenon that fosters better heat transfer and reduced pressure drop. Heat sinks of this variety would find practical applications in efficient electronic cooling. Show less
