I use my knowledge of linguistics, cognitive science, rhetoric, and writing studies to help future engineers develop their communication and critical thinking skills--both individually and in teams--within Cornell's prestigious Engineering Communications Program in the College of Engineering. Students learn how to work in teams, communicate to multiple kinds of real high- and low-stake audiences, produce technical documents, perform user documentation, manage large projects, and deliver audience-focused multimodal presentations on technical topics. I teach a range of courses that introduce students to writing in academic and professional contexts, English language linguistics, environmental communication, and the digital humanities. In my writing courses, I apply an anti-racist pedagogy to help students find ways to make their educations speak to their lived experiences and larger social issues concerning access and privilege. In my linguistics classes, I bring attention to often overlooked topics such as the sociohistorical ways grammatical and discursive markers have come to index and entrench language ideologies, such as ideas of “correct language,” across social contexts and world Englishes. In my digital humanities classes, I spotlight the labor necessary to make technology invisible and user-focused in areas such as internet infrastructure, eWaste, social media content moderation, and AAA video game development. My teaching has earned me multiple outstanding service awards, the Department of English’s social justice teaching award, the James A Robinson award of outstanding undergraduate teaching, and a nomination for the university-wide teaching excellence award. Guided by data-driven pedagogy and classroom-specific writing analytic analysis, I teach writing-intensive courses to students of different levels of preparedness. Working with the department chairs and a team of skilled instructors, I've helped to revise and develop CNM's basic writing course. Corpus Arts is a non-profit queer literacy center, helping to provide a safe and nurturing space for LGBTQ+ folks to learn and share their stories. As director, I managed volunteers, planned events, and booked shows for visual artists, musicians, and writers. I also wrote grants to fund large community events for queer and trans people, many of whom do not fit into white male gay bars and exist outside of official academic spaces on college campuses.
