As a library assistant that specializes in teen services for the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, I engage Pittsburgh’s youth through informal mentorship, plan programs that reflect our teen patrons’ interests, visit schools to promote literature and events at nearby branches, and organize system-wide events alongside other teen specialists. In my time I have worked for three locations: the Hill District branch, CLP’s outreach team LYNCS, and currently for the East Liberty Branch. Throughout July 2015, the Carnegie Library in Hazelwood hosted the Teen Reading Lounge, where I alongside Teen Specialist Terrel Williams, introduced and distributed books with the common themes of community and identity to those who participated. We led discussions about the books and created a book of super heroes that defend Hazelwood. The Warhol Museum partnered with Artists Image Resource, Westinghouse High School, and 1Hood Media, to create a mural in order to open discussion about African American experiences with police brutality. The mural was juxtaposed with the "13 Most Wanted" exhibition that closed on January 4, 2015. I was responsible, along with other artists, to facilitate this discussion and the execution of a print-based mural.
