Back office duties include conducting patient intakes, recording medical history, transcribing during the visit, setting up for and assisting during procedures. Facilitate communication between the provider and patient regarding lab results, post-operative follow-ups, and insurance coverage. Front office duties include answering phone calls, checking patients in, scheduling appointments, processing referrals, and confirming insurance eligibility. Taken on leadership roles of training new medical assistants, developing training guidelines, managing our pathology duties, and tracking and ordering the medical supplies for the office. I spend 3 hours a week in the Neurodevelopmental outpatient clinic waiting room reading stories in both Spanish and English to children. I interact with the patients, ask them questions about the books, and ease their experience while waiting for their appointment. I also mentor and train new reading volunteers.

This program is in the Neurodevelopment Clinic at Seattle Children's Hospital and aims to encourage families to make reading an important part of a child's life and use it as a way to assess developmental stages by giving a book to each patient at their appointment. I coordinated the program by keeping track of the inventory of books, inputting data from weekly surveys from the patient families, and sending out weekly email updates. I helped in the expansion of the program to the inpatient floors of Seattle Children's as well. Show less

I am studying genetic interactions in mutated strains of C. elegans that may influence disease phenotypes and help us better understand complex disease. We have developed a high-throughput approach for screening for genetic interactions by inducing gene knockdown with RNAi in populations of highly mutated C. elegans. I chose to study 40 transcription factor genes that were knocked down by seeding plates with RNAi bacteria. Through a Molecular Inversion Probe (MIPs) sequencing strategy we are able to calculate the percent abundance of one strain within a population. I mapped potential genetic interactions by crossing the mutated strains to a control strain and attempting to identify regions of the strain's genome that have a competitive advantage when grown on a particular RNAi. I presented my research at the rDNA Symposium Poster Session hosted by UW Genome Sciences on August 11th, 2016. Show less
