Project Management: Manager of the Extension’s flagship project to help Maine farmers improve farm record keeping abilities. Duties include marketing, financial management, reporting, recruiting, and client interaction. Project Execution: Consulted with farmers individually to determine best approach to improve record keeping system. After a “best fit” record keeping system or was identified I was then responsible for helping the client implement the changes and learn to use the software. My interaction varied from minor adjustments to complete overhaul of financial record keeping system including business planning and enterprise budgeting. In addition, I collaborated with extension professionals across the state to serve the needs of farmers inquiring about record keeping material. I am currently finalizing a comprehensive guide to setting up a farm business in QuickBooks so that Maine farmers have access to record keeping help when the budget expires in December. Presenting: Presented on practical farm recordkeeping at the national AgrAbility conference in Maine with 45 farmers across the country in attendance. Additionally, I also taught a series of 3 excel record keeping classes to help farmers learn to track income and expenses. Reporting: Responsible for filing quarterly spending and progress reports to the Farm Service Agency which include client interaction, feedback, demographics, and justification for all spending for the budget. I created pre and post consultation surveys which the farmers I work with complete. These forms are used to identify specific client needs, identify what area of their business they would like to emphasize improving, and collect demographic information such as location and commodities which they grow which are essential to reporting for the FSA.
