My role at CDE is installing material processing and recycling plants, from set out, assembly, to preparation for commisioning. The CDE plants incorparates material screening, washing, seperation, and stockpiling. Individual assembled plant items range in scale from hundreds of kilograms up to around 100 tons for the largest machinery. The role involves frequent use of mobile cranes (40t to 200t), powered access equipment, and power tools. I use CAD models and design/technical documentation during the installs for reference, and to try and solve issues I run in to. Co-ordiantion with various project stakeholders is an important part of the role, and I may be tasked with supervising a small team on site. My communication skills have developed as I have seen how crucial effective communication on these engineering projects. Adherence to and awareness of industry safety practices is also important throughout the site work, with a SSSTS course and other safety training courses completed to enable this. Dealing with project specific problems such as faulty parts, incorrect sub assemblies, civil works, and flawed designs has also helped improve my problem solving. Learning to anticipate and prepare for potential issues, while adapting to immediate problems to keep the project progressing have been worthwhile skills to develop. Coming from a design orientated placement and dissertation project at university, it has also been valuable to experience first hand the real output of CAD/CAM. And to also see the bigger picture of project execution beyond design and office work, and how useful feedback and design iteration can be. Show less
