Chukwuemeka Akam is a talented, resourceful and results oriented project management leader in international development. Akam’s work with Management Sciences for Health in leading a large-scale infectious disease mitigation program in Nigeria is an example, where he was responsible for an insecticide-treated bed nets distribution campaign. He and his team overcame major logistical and distribution challenges in successfully reaching more than 7 million residents and achieving a 99.9% distribution rate in river communities of Delta State, Nigeria. I’m pleased to recommend Akam for opportunities where he can leverage his skills in leading other challenging projects and programs.

Akam has flourished as a dependable professional and friend during the more than 4 years that I had worked with him at Catholic Relief Services (CRS). He is renowned for his capacity for empathy, his calming demeanor, and his extraordinary capacity for building rapport with individuals with whom he works. Akam is an effective communicator and leader, and executives value his straightforward yet caring style. I feel grateful to have Akam as both a friend and colleague because he consistently brings positive outcomes to businesses and any venture he works with.

Akam worked with me at Catholic Relief Services (CRS) from 2015 – 2017 in the Project Management thematic area. His work ethic and attention to detail are commendable, and his ability to handle complex tasks and projects efficiently and effectively is truly impressive. Throughout implementation, he excelled at taking the initiative, took ownership of his responsibilities, and cared greatly about the success of the organisation, its people, and its broader mission. He was also skilled at embracing the agile and waterfall approaches to program management and consistently delivered high-quality results. His positive attitude, excellent communication skills, and team-player skills contributed to our team's success on the Global Fund HIV grant. Having you on our team was a pleasure, and I look forward to witnessing your continued growth and success.

MSH is an international not-for-profit organization working with countries and communities to save lives and improve the health of the world's poorest and most vulnerable people by building strong, resilient, and sustainable health systems in 150 countries around the world. Worked with a team of 60 persons to carry out grant operations in 11 states of Nigeria as the Senior Project Officer on the Global Fund-supported grant that was designed to eradicate malaria in Africa. The grant award's approved budget was $27 million. The state and federal governments of Nigeria collaborated with Management Sciences for Health (MSH) on this project as sub-recipients to Catholic Relief Services (CRS). Project management, stakeholder management, knowledge management, and cross-functional leadership engagement were all directly under my purview. By the end of the grant iteration, a well-coordinated grant with a cash burn rate of over 97%, project scope and time alignment with the grant agreement, and an exceptional donor rating (B2) was achieved by the team and ultimately MSH. Description of Responsibilities: * Project Management: Ensure all program activities with budgetary implications are allowable, reasonable and allocable in the budget, and are carried out against set milestones guided by a well-structured detailed implementation plan. * Stakeholder Management: Act as a point of contact for donor relationships, including contributing to donor strategy documents and maintaining ongoing communications. This relationship spans other relevant stakeholders with levels of influence and interest in the grant implementation. *Knowledge Management: Amongst other intricacies, keep updated project details including challenges, and strategic plans, properly archived for reference by Senior Management and other stakeholders. * Portfolio Management: Act as a point of contact for international partners and local contractors, including managing grant agreements and contract oversight. Worked with a team of experts on a Global Fund-supported project with the “Impact HIV” tag, my team and I carried out grant operations throughout five states in Nigeria with an approved budget of roughly $600,000. In collaboration with the state and federal governments, CRS implemented this grant as sub-recipients to the principal recipient (FHI360). My immediate duties included project management, operations management, knowledge management, and cross-functional leadership engagement. Ultimately, responsible grant closeout was achieved in 2019 by the team with no unsupported costs recorded, and CRS also achieved the best financial burn rate among the six implementing organizations for three consecutive quarters of the implementation period, as recognized by the government and the principal recipient. As the program assistant for the project “Investing for Impact Against HIV”, a grant backed by the Global Fund, my team and I executed grant activities throughout 5 states with an allowed budget of roughly $600,000. This was carried out in partnership with the state and federal governments as sub-recipients of a follow-up iteration that was approved by the principal receiver (FHI360). Project management, operations management, knowledge management, fleet management, procurement, and administration were all directly under my leadership. The organizational goal to administer grants responsibly was achieved, which led to further grant iterations aligned with the elimination of HIV in Nigeria. Show less

Supported a team of professionals to carry out grant operations in one state of Nigeria as a volunteer with FHI360 on the project backed by the Global Fund and titled Strengthening Integrated Delivery of HIV/AIDS Services - SIDHAS. As the Principal recipient of a new HIV/AIDS intervention in the country, this was carried out in collaboration with the state government. I was specifically responsible for learning and supporting the grant's project management, operations management, knowledge management interventions.
