As a junior at UNH, I was placed in a preschool classroom at the Child Study and Development Center on campus as a part of my HDFS 709 course. I spent 9 hours a week in the classroom under my cooperating teacher as well as attending a weekly one hour seminar to reflect on the internship experience. Throughout this experience I learned how to design curriculum around children interests, create a safe and comfortable learning space for children, learned how to work with families from various backgrounds, addressed special nutritional needs in children, and documented child progress using photos and journey books. During my junior and senior year of high school I attended the Seacoast School of Technology's Early Childhood Education program. Our class was split in half and every other week we would take turns in our preschool classroom working with children, families, teachers and getting hands on experience in the field. On opposing weeks, we would be upstairs learning about education, theories, lesson planning, documenting child progress and much more. This is when I really decided that I wanted to become an educator, specifically in early childhood. I developed a love for preschool in these two years and also had my first experiences in special education, also sparking my passion for working with children with special needs. Show less
