Sarah Dawes (She/Her)

I’ve had the absolute pleasure of managing Caitlin as I’ve settled into my role at Black Dog Institute (BDI). Caitlin has been instrumental in developing the Major Donor portfolio at BDI and has delivered some outstanding events for the Institute, including its annual Research Showcase. Caitlin is a dream team player who possesses razor-shape intelligence and efficiency in everything she applies herself to. Now an accomplished project coordinator, stakeholder manager, and data analyst with a keen eye for detail. Calm, inclusive, and with high integrity, Caitlin is an asset to any team. We hope to welcome Caitlin back to the Institute once she returns from her travels.

As the Philanthropy & Major Gift Coordinator, I played a key role in the growth of BDI's philanthropy portfolio to expand the support of BDI's mental health research and programs. As an integral part of the Philanthropy & Development team, I was responsible for nurturing close relationships with existing and prospective high value donors. I was also responsible for project managing major donor events, assisting with writing proposals, grant applications and acquittal reports, and coordinating the production of appropriate communication materials with our donors. Prior to the addition of a Trusts & Foundations Specialist in early 2022, my role also included a broader T&F remit. Some achievements throughout my time in this role include:- Coordinating two major donor events, each bringing in $125-130K - Coordinating the annual Black Dog Institute Research Showcase webinar which, in 2021, brought in 215 attendees. Of these attendees we gained 60 leads, an increase in donations, $325K in tied funding and one corporate partnership- Setting up and coordinating a quarterly philanthropy eNewsletter to update our portfolio on the work being done at the Institute- Coordinating a Women's Giving Circle of up to 40 women - including a bi-annual 'meet-the-researcher' lunch, as well as ongoing communication materials - Organising a private project update webinar for select tied funders, bringing in an additional $30K in tied funds- As a team, we were awarded a Governor-General medal in recognition of our contribution to helping people, uplifting those around us, and making our community better. My administrative role was to provide best-practice donor care and focused on supporting the fundraising team in database and administrative tasks. It involved customer service components and front-line interactions, ensuring positive interactions with donors. A core component of my role also involved accurately and efficiently maintaining all information held within the supporter database (Raisers Edge), uploading data, de-duping and cleaning up of records, and extracting data for reporting. The role involved assisting the many teams that made up the overall fundraising team in their functions. Show less

I was selected to volunteer for a month as a legal intern with HAQ: Centre for Child Rights, an NGO located in Delhi, India. Myself and my fellow team members worked on spreading information to judges and legal counsel on precedents set nationally and internationally within the child rights framework. We did this by compiling case notes on legal issues surrounding children in India. The internship was part of the Macquarie University International Professional and Community Engagement (PACE) Program. PACE International offers Macquarie University students a unique opportunity to work and learn in partnership with communities overseas. The program enabled me to apply classroom learning, theories and research to real world situations and develop the capabilities to actively contribute to a more just, inclusive and sustainable world. I volunteered weekly at the National Children's & Youth Law Centre. The Centre provides free and confidential legal advice to anyone under age 25 through its Lawmail service. Kids from across Australia contact Lawmail for help resolving all kinds of issues, including bullying, violence and conflict arising online, at home, school, work, etc. We explain the law, their rights, the practical things they can do to exercise these rights and the local services that are available to help them work things out. As a volunteer I was responsible for drafting the Lawmail responses and other general administrative tasks such as managing telephone inquiries, managing the email inbox and proof-reading and editing Lawstuff website pages.
