In this one-month volunteer expedition, I lived in a remote village and worked as an assistant teacher at the local school as part of a joint initiative between Think Pacific and the Fijian government to increase educational opportunities. During this volunteer programme, I advanced my organisational skills, adaptability, confidence, leadership skills. This 3-week volunteer programme involved assuming the role of a teacher in 5 different schools for the duration of a schools day. In this role, I had to teach classes ranging from 70-130 pupils of all different ages and abilities. Adapting to the drastic cultural differences and having to learn Kenyan sign language in order to teach in two of the schools was an enlightening experience to be a part of.
