During the spring semester of 2018 I was given the chance to intern with BigHouse Foundation in Opelika, Al. BigHouse is a Christ-Centered non-profit that seeks to serve the needs of the foster care community. As an intern, I completed a 470 hour internship where I was able to work on a variety of projects and acquire a better understanding of how a non-profit works. The following highlights the 2 most significant projects I was a part of and what I learned from those experiences.Glitz, Glam, and Gowns- GGG is an annual event hosted by BigHouse Foundation. It is a completely free prom dress shopping event for teenage girls in foster care in the entire state of Alabama. BigHouse strives to ensure these teens do not have to miss out on prom just because they may not be able to afford a dress. I took the lead planning this event and was responsible for creating flyers for donation collections, designing invitations, planning decorations and food, and coordinating the day-of logistics. This event taught me how much work goes into planning an event and how to best manage the time and money I have for the event. It also solidified my passion for event coordination. Swimsuit and Towel Drive- Every year, BigHouse collects swimsuits and embroiders towels for all of the children who came into Alabama foster care in the past year. This year I was able to work closely with the coordinator of this project. Together, the BigHouse staff completed over 1,200 orders in 2 months. I learned a lot about time management and multi-tasking during my time on this project. I often needed to work on up to 6 towels at a time and utilized my prioritization and time management skills to complete them.
