Short term project to complete a retrospective data mart project for the marketing area of the Co-Op Group to use for modelling purposes. In a nutshell the project involved taking large volumes of data from various different databases/platforms and developing a process to populate the data in to a single SAS data mart, with particular emphasis on efficiency and scalability. This role came about from a recommendation from the Financial Services side of the business based on previous work that I had completed for them. Show less

My work at Co-op bank largely involved taking existing fragmented code and building a single production solution incorporating many pieces of code to create a single data repository for the modelling team. I was also involved in extracting data from a number of systems from other business areas and creating a data mart for use in the Marketing department. I believe that this work has added real value to the department and the feedback that I had was extremely positive. During my time working as a consultant for Citi Cards, I was involved in a number of major projects, many of which have gone on to become fully integrated production solutions. I worked with many areas of the business and successfully completed all projects on time and fully functional without error. My primary role within the Database Marketing department at MBNA was the development and enhancement of the existing Data Warehouse environment, which used the SAS/Warehouse Administrator client/server platform. I have become fully conversant with SAS/Warehouse Administrator over the last 2 years, and developed many new processes using this technology. A large part of my role was data manipulation, filtering and standardisation of particularly large data sources which make up the Marketing database. Due to the size of the datasets held in SAS, I focused a lot on performance tuning and coding efficiencies which have resulted in processes being reduced in run time by up to 10 times, and disk utilisation more than halved. Adding automated reporting was also a key achievement of mine. I wrote a number of macros to facilitate the reporting of system status as well as real time error checking of logs as processes run. Developing the marketing database provided many opportunities for process improvement, including converting code to a modular format so that new data sources can be added without the need for code amendments. SAS SPDS server was used extensively throughout the department, and as such I became very familiar with the set up, use, and optimisation of this powerful software. Show less

My role as SAS Systems Administrator was second to my involvement in projects as a developer, however it still encompassed many different elements. These included: Administrating user accounts and access to the server, as well as file and directory level permissions. Managing disk usage and arranging file systems. Installation and maintenance of SAS products, as well as other applications on the servers. Disaster Recovery strategy and testing of implementation. As a SAS developer, I worked on many projects, the more substantial being the creation of a Single Customer View in association with Experian, and the implementation of the SAS Scheduler. For most projects I was solely responsible for the entire life cycle, but I also worked from specifications produced by other, more business oriented colleagues. Most of the projects I worked on involved close interaction with the business areas of the company, and I believe this was key to the success of these developments. Being both the administrator and a developer, I had the opportunity to look at file and data structures from both points of view, which was advantageous in ensuring the most efficient and appropriate storage methods were chosen for each new data store. My involvement in both projects, and team work, from these different aspects, widened my knowledge and experience hugely during my time in this role, and I believe I gained a more complete view of the entire life cycle of a project as a result of this.
