Baffinland sits on one the largest deposits of high-grade iron ore found anywhere in the world. It is positioned to be a "great Canadian story". First discovered in 1962 when prospectors flying over noticed their instrumentation going haywire. Upon landing they discovered the source of magnetic mayhem was a massive mountain of high-grade iron ore. But it wasn't to be until 2015 that this deposit and it's high-grade ore would begin hitting the markets. What's so special about this deposit and operation? Simply put.... NO TAILINGS!!! The deposit is so pure that we crush and screen the ore on site, and then ship it directly to markets – no concentrating or processing is needed, and therefore no tailings are produced. To the best of my knowledge this makes it the only mine in the country operating without a tailing pond to manage and therefore possibly the most environmentally friendly mine in the country. Make no mistake, the challenges that come with working and operating in the arctic are huge! But the potential rewards are equally huge, and I believe the team here at Baffinland are up for the challenge. As the world seeks to tackle the challenges of climate change, high grade ore provides an avenue of solution as the GHG emissions generated to convert our ore into steel are a fraction of that required to smelt our low-grade cousin. I would also note that steel is among the few 100% recyclable products in use in the world. Baffinland is being part of the solution, not contributing to the problem. How many heavy industries get to say that?
