In 1991 Davies founded Sterling Ultra Precision, which became the dominant supplier to the world of ultra-precision machine systems and lens design software for the production of Contact Lenses and Intra-Ocular Lenses (for implant after cataract surgeries). Sterling immediately enhanced machine precision over its best competitors by a factor of 10 to 30 times, doubling the price of machinery used for ophthalmic manufacturing. Sterling also successfully developed a series of fast-tool-servo attachments for the production of free-form optics (non-rotationally symmetrical optical surfaces), giving the company access to the electro-optics market as well as ophthalmic production, and a global market share in free-form optics > 95% By 2009 Sterling had its advanced ultra-precision machine systems working in lens manufacturing laboratories in 34 countries, and was trading in 45 countries. In 2010 Davies arranged to transfer ownership and control of Sterling to Ametek (NYSE symbol AME) and gradually withdrew from the company to devote time to his medical research objectives.
