I completed a week long externship, riding along on farm calls with Dr. Veeman, Dr. Turner, and Dr. Skurdal. During my time with them I learned the basic aspects of running an ambulatory style practice including basic business set up and billing structure, limitations/ benefits of operations and services, also the advantages to providing farm calls for animals unable to be transported to a clinic. Procedures I was able to assist with included alpaca/goat hoof trims and vaccinations, witnessing… Show more I completed a week long externship, riding along on farm calls with Dr. Veeman, Dr. Turner, and Dr. Skurdal. During my time with them I learned the basic aspects of running an ambulatory style practice including basic business set up and billing structure, limitations/ benefits of operations and services, also the advantages to providing farm calls for animals unable to be transported to a clinic. Procedures I was able to assist with included alpaca/goat hoof trims and vaccinations, witnessing and assisting with a goat kid entropion correction surgery, examining and treating a goat mastitis case, using a FAMACHA Card to analyze goat mucous membranes for potential parasite load, tissue sampling for genetic analysis of beef cattle, and pregnancy checks and herd health evaluations of dairy cattle. I was also able to consult with Dr. Wustenberg on the proper chute/management equipment and barn modifications necessary to convert a dairy barn into a beef facility.
