My PhD thesis, titled “Making a mission space: Milingimbi Methodist Mission, 1923–1943” is a detailed study of the opening decades of the mission and the advent of Methodist missionary presence in the Arnhem Land region. This research contributes to the scholarship outlining the complex history of Indigenous-settler relations in settler-colonial contexts. Through an anthropological lens, my research speaks to more current debates concerning notions of care and development of Indigenous peoples and to the complexities attached to understanding agency in spaces where different worldviews meet and interact.I bring an in-depth understanding of the historical context from which to build anthropological analysis of Yolŋu experiences today, who continue to connect to their lands and to the years when their ancestors engaged with, negotiated, and shaped the missions established across Arnhem Land. My PhD thesis reflects my strong commitment to evidence-based research and to my respect for Indigenous peoples and their historical agency. By tracing changes taking place over time, I show there is clear evidence in the archive of Yolŋu agency, leadership, and robust cultural influence. Therefore, as an encultured relational space, I draw attention to how the mission was co-produced, notwithstanding the encounters between missionaries and Yolŋu remained (and increasingly became) hierarchical.
