After successful completion of this course, you will have increased your ability to: apply theories and frameworks to economic or organizational issues in practice; use and apply academic research methods and/or problem solving methods to socio-economic issues; formulate, communicate, and present your findings into a well-crafted and clearly formulated (advisory) report; independently set-up and manage your own research project; successfully manage and solve a complex research question in a short time-span; coordinate and interact with different stakeholders that are involved with the project; leverage diversity of multidisciplinary and international teams; analyse intercultural situations, apply strategies to bridge cultural differences, and demonstrate intercultural appropriate behavior; apply different (combinations of) research tools in an environment where the academic research structure is less well developed (limited availability of data, academic literature, etc.). Contents The challenges and opportunities countries, institutions, and organizations face are manifold. A large number of them are of a socio-economic nature. Topics like industrial and technological transformation, large scale job destruction and job creation, making the technological and organizational jump to carbon neutral products and services, or the increasing income inequality represent both opportunities and threats at the macro, meso, and micro level. In this elective you will work within a multidisciplinary team composed of students from the Faculty of Economics and Business (UvA) and with students from the University of Curaçao (UoC) on socio-economic research questions formulated by public and private organizations in Curaçao (‘client organizations’). During this intensively 12 EC elective you and your team members will reside in Curaçao for a two week period to gather data, conduct analyses, and complete your report. Show less
