Medical Scribe
-
May 2015 - Present
As a current internal medicine medical scribe, I assist physicians in patient rounding by notifying nurses prior to evaluating the patient, updating the medical note, and recording patient testimonies within EPIC. During a patient encounter, I am expected to accurately document and interpret what both the patient and provider say. Depending on a physician’s preferences, I also help send pages to consulting specialties, place calls to outside hospitals for outstanding diagnostic tests, and update the assessment and plan as appropriate. I also contribute to administrative tasks by completing hand hygiene audits for the hospital and supply additional data used in studies of provider efficiency. Working within internal medicine has exposed me to various areas of medicine and helped me better understand how each member of the medical team contributes to patient care. In this position, I have been challenged to learn medical terminology, understand lab values, anticipate plans for a patient’s stay, and become comfortable navigating EPIC. This position afforded me the opportunity to utilize traits such as an ambition for learning, teamwork, task management, and empathy in the environment I hope to work. Show less

Early Literacy Program Director
-
Jan 2015 - May 2015
La Oportunidad is a Minneapolis organization that provides programs for Hispanic immigrants. There, I conducted a once-weekly Spanish lesson plan to promote childhood literacy and cultural understanding. Together, children and I read books focused on Hispanic culture and discussed topics from the text. After, we completed art projects to encourage creativity and reinforce the daily theme, such as family, tradition, or goals. Working with this population increased my desire to advocate for the underserved, refined my leadership skills, and provided an interdisciplinary perspective of the socioeconomic and cultural barriers that influence the physical and mental health of Latino children. Undergraduate Research Assistant

Sep 2013 - May 2015
My desire to work in research stemmed from my hope to apply and expand upon the theoretical knowledge I had learned in class within the laboratory setting. Initially, I conducted mouse tail ligations and polymerase chain reactions for mouse litter genotyping. Once more experienced, I submitted a research proposal to further my lab involvement by maintaining mouse litters and breeding schemes to create a model for colorectal cancer. In addition, I performed mouse necropsy once moribund for tumor analysis and sustained cell cultures from tumor isolate samples for analysis to determine transposon position. All experiments and findings were documented and reported in weekly lab meetings. On a regular basis, I interacted professionally with various other team members such as oncology fellows, graduate researchers, PhD candidates, and my investigator. In working with these individuals, I came to understand how their projects contributed to the overall goal of our laboratory. I communicated with these members during weekly meetings to report findings and address problems. Outside of the laboratory, I attended conferences and events to increase my understanding of how targeted gene therapies influence the field of oncology as well as the importance of evidence-based practice within the field of medicine. English Tutor

Jan 2014 - May 2014
As a tutor, I worked with Spanish-speaking students for whom English is a second language and whose parents did not speak English. By tutoring subjects of reading, writing, and grammar, I provided further support to help these students achieve academic success. During a five-hour period on Friday afternoons, I arranged educational activities for Latino children of various group sizes. I was required to be comfortable interacting with and encouraging students aged 5 through 13. Seeing the growth of these students within the language was exceptionally rewarding and helped me to become a better communicator, which will be advantageous as a healthcare provider. Show less

Program Counselor
-
Oct 2011 - Oct 2012
ACR Homes is an organization in the Twin Cities area consisting of multiple group homes aiming to give personalized care for individuals with developmental delay and acute medical needs. As a Program Counselor, I provided daily cares of living (as complex as seizure protocols or G-tube maintenance), passed medication, assessed vital signs, organized engaging events for residents, and appropriately documented my cares. I was also responsible for therapeutically communicating with both residents and staff to effectively provide excellent care and necessary resources. The collaboration was subsequently crucial to the residents’ ability to meet goals and gain confidence within the community. As I developed relationships with my residents, I grew an increased sense of empathy and desire to advocate for this population so as to provide the best, most person-centered care possible. Understanding each resident’s routine and the importance of consistency in daily cares was one important way I was able to advocate for and anticipate my resident’s needs. I was also trained to attend appointments and emergency evaluations in order to provide critical information about the events leading to a visit as well as their home regimen. Having an understanding of diagnoses and medications was important to advocating for their safety and wellness in all care settings. Show less
