I didn't know if for a long time, but the biggest drawback of starting my own business at an early age is having fewer peers and mentors. APDF became a great way for me to find both. I remember meeting Brian in one of my early APDF experiences and thinking: Who is this big bald dude cracking jokes and passing me doodles during the presentation? Damn it, I'm trying to pay attention! Little did I know we'd develop a great working relationship. I realized not only how much he had contributed to the APDF, but also clearly had created an awesome firm and is as smart as he is funny. Brian's wit is like a scalpel and ethics are exemplary. He's a great balance of the theoretical and practical and the kind of mentor I didn't know I needed. I hope I can build a firm like his. Now that he's doing less APDF leadership than in the past, he's missed. In many ways I felt like I was just starting to appreciate all he had to offer. I just hope that as my tenure on the board draws to a close that he and I will continue to find excuses to doodle, laugh, and learn together.
