Using the Sylvan Learning Plan I work primarily with younger students from grades Kindergarten to Fifth grade, and then students from sixth to eighth grade if needed. My main focus is academic reading consisting of vocabulary and sight words, sentence structure, long/short vowels, and more. As of April 11th, 2022 we have started contracted work with Pasadena Unified School District where we will work with selected schools and students on the school sites for an hour twice a week. The students at the school site are behind their current grade level skill sets. Our duty at the school site is to help the students reach their grade level skill sets in comprehension, vocabulary, and phonics.

I assisted students in the Ujima/Blackademia Program with their essays across multiple subjects. With the students, I go over various stages of their paper with them whether they are just starting or halfway through. Both programs focus on and prioritize the academic achievements of Black/African-American students on the Pasadena City College campus. I also split my time at the Writing Support Center on the PCC campus where I also help students with their essays at any stage. I have held workshops on time management and essay writing to help students who struggle.

I was a holiday assistant to one of the personal shoppers within the store where my duties included assisting her with orders for both her corporate and non-corporate clients, as well as ringing up customers for her. With each customer I would inform them of sales that we had going on and would assist them by finding the most beneficial deals. Worked for the First-year pathways program for incoming first-year college students. The math tutoring was for the summer and was a 4 week program and was in charge of 11-25 students a week and taught Intermediate Algebra. The Pathways Program is geared towards first-year incoming college students and throughout the students week are being prepared for the math level they tested in to and are given important information that will help them through their first year. As of this year the Pathways Program has switched focus from mathematics to focusing on careers. Within this update my title has changed from Tutor to Jam Leader and everyday I would lead a workshop to help students understand aspects of college.

Ten Thousand Villages is a nonprofit fair trade organization that markets handcrafted products made by disadvantaged artisans from more than 120 artisan groups in more than 35 countries. As one of the world’s largest and oldest fair trade organizations. Ten Thousand Villages cultivates long-term buying relationships in which artisans receive a fair price for their work and consumers have access to gifts, accessories and home décor from around the world. As a volunteer here I ring customers up, restock the shelves when necessary, greet customers and inform new customers about the store.

The Los Angeles Black Worker Center develops organized power and authentic grassroots leadership among Black workers (unionized, non-union, immigrant, formerly incarcerated and the unemployed) and the extended community to reverse the disproportionate levels of unemployment and underemployment in the Los Angeles Black community. The center’s key strategies are: leadership development of workers, research, and building strategic alliances between the Los Angeles labor movement and the Black community for action in collective campaigns. As an intern here I was in charge of creating a foundation for an anti- wage theft handbook to inform workers as to learn the signs of wage theft and how to fight back thorugh filing the proper complaints and to whom as well as new laws that are being imposed concerning wage in the near future.
