Teaching Philosophy Teaching is about making connections. I feel the misconception of teaching is assuming that in order to be a good teacher means you have extensive knowledge on a given subject. Though there is the obvious need to retain and recite information, I have found that the best teachers are the ones who keep you engaged and excited about learning. Since deciding to become a teacher I knew I wanted to create a class environment where students feel comfortable in there in their own skin. A relaxed but structured class setting is where I found success as student. As a new teacher I plan to emphasize to students that collectively we set the learning environment and every individual brings something special to the classroom. Special education students come in a variety of abilities and disabilities. It is important to understand that no two students learn or think the same. I have learned through my experiences in Special Education classes that a teacher must be willing to adjust their lesson plan and agendas on any given moment. Learning to cope with different emotional and educational needs requires a lot of patience and understanding of your students. I have been successful thus far in my ability to understand the importance of environment. I make sure the students know that above all I care about their well-being. Once a student knows I care for them it is much easier for me to raise the expectations I have for them in class. I will take my coaching experience of 8 years with me into the classroom as I begin my teaching career. It is in coaching that I have firmly come to learn that students of the same age can be vastly different in skill set, ability to comprehend, physical maturity and more. The ability to access my team's diversity and still apply a practice plan to teach and keep them engaged is exactly how I will approach the classroom. Show less
