As a Sub Officer I was either in charge of an operational fire crew or depending on the size of the fire station, was Officer in charge of the watch. I was also an inspecting and enforcement officer working in various Fire Safety departments throughout East Lancashire. This position filled about 50% of my career. For over six years I was based at Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service training center (Washington Hall - Chorley). First as an instructor/trainer with the Industrial Faculty, and then as deputy course director within the same Faculty.
