      • Aug 2000 - Present

Currently, I am an IB MYP Language and literature, English Language acquisition and DP English B SL/HL teacher. Aside from unit and lesson planning, a key aspect of my role as a teacher is getting to know my students as individuals. In doing so, I have been able to effectively individualise and differentiate their learning experiences and assessment opportunities in ways that allow them to successfully demonstrate their learning and growth. Key to this is planning collaboratively with subject area teachers, our Student Support Services (SST) and teaching with the support of classroom aids and push-in support teachers and professionals. Over the years, I have worked closely with the SST department and have learned how to effectively modify my own approaches to teaching, formative and summative tasks, and strategies to meet the needs of each student. An example of a classroom practice that I employ is using Metacognitive Strategies that allow students to plan and organize, monitor their own work, direct their own learning, and to self-reflect throughout the learning process. I have been involved in planning and implementing meaningful, relevant, and authentic IDU's and cross-curricular teaching. My focus is the development of our students, mission and commitment to IB values and standards and practices across the MYP and DP. In addition to my teaching role, I am proud to be a Koti advisor for Grades 6, 7, and 8 students. 'Koti' roughly translates to 'home' in Finnish. As a Koti advisor, I meet with my Koti students everyday to check-in on their wellbeing, share a snack, talk, and engage in structured and unstructured activities, fun competitions, and so forth. This role has allowed me to get to know many Gr. 6-8 students. At ISH, I have been on various committees (Equity Committee, ILP for ALL working group, PD Committee), workshops (IB MYP and DP, CEESA), courses (Dublin City University (DCU) "How To Teach Online: Providing Continuity for Students'' and CAST).

    • Grade 7-8 English and Social Studies Teacher

Tikkurila International School, now the International School of Vantaa, is a Finnish state school offering the Finnish curriculum as set by the National Board of Education in English. When I joined the school in August 2000, the premises were the top two floors of a small neighbourhood mall in the Tikkurila district of the city of Vantaa. It consisted of Grades 1-6. I was hired to start the Grade 7 English programme and Social Studies programme. The following year, I started the Grade 8 English and Social Studies programmes. I designed the English and Social Studies programme curriculums based on the framework provided by the National Board of Education. At TIS; I developed and enhanced many critical skills. I learned: - how to start a grade level programme from scratch - develop and resource a Grade 7 and 8 English programme - develop and resource a Grade 7 and 8 Social Studies programme I also had to opportunity to incorporate the many fabulous cultural and learning resources (libraries, museums, etc.) on offer in the Helsinki capital region.

      1. Tabuk International School, Tabuk, KSA (1994-1996) Tabuk International School is where I began my international career. I was hired to teach Grade 6-8 as a generalist teacher. Accordingly, I taught English, Social Studies, Science, Math, Art and Physical Education. The curriculum followed at this time was an amalgamation of British and American curriculum design. Adding to the challenging nature of this assignment was the fact that the class was combined - Grade 6, 7 and 8 in one room. while challenging, this teaching assignment helped to make me the teacher I am today. I learned: - to be more resourceful - to more effectively differentiate my teaching - to plan effective units and lessons targeted to meet the needs of my students and the different Grade levels Adding to my experience and to the student experience, was the natural beauty and historical richness of Tabuk and the surrounding environment (the Tabuk Region in northwestern Saudi Arabia). Tabuk's proximity to many Middle Eastern countries allowed me to learn about the culture and history of the region, as well as travel to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the Arab Republic of Egypt. 2. American International School of Abu Dhabi (1996-1998) My teaching assignment at the American International School of Abu Dhabi was Grade 7 English and Social Studies. AISA then followed an American curriculum. At AISA, I taught both English and Social Studies with the support of established English and Humanity departments. Joint planning was the norm. At AISA, I was able to: - to collaborate more effectively in planning and teaching - to continue to develop international mindedness and apply it to my teaching - to continue to develop my differentiation skills Adding to my experience, was a modern, well-equipped school facility and the beautiful city of Abu Dhabi and natural environment of the Emirates.

I began my teaching career with the Calgary Board of Education as a Grade 6 Elementary Generalist. During my time with the CBE, I worked in a variety of settings, teaching students with wide ranging needs. I also had the opportunity to work in high needs settings. In addition to allowing me to develop my teaching skills, I learned many other skills that laid the foundations for my career. I learned: - the importance of collaboration - differentiation - effective planning - unit and lesson - the importance of patience - the differences and links between theory and 'real-life' teaching - how much I appreciate the importance and responsibilities of my profession
