Dr King has been engaged in tertiary education in pharmacology and phaysiology to science and medical students in UCL for 27 years. During that time, Dr King also held the posts of Chair of Examiners in Physiology and Chair of the Physiology Steering Committee. In 2020, Dr King retired from academic duties. Dr King worked on drug programmes for idiopathic visceral pain, adynamic ileus (a paralyzing disorder of the injured gut) and irritable bowel syndrome (a condition of disordered motility and secretion). One outcome of this work was the development of a series of 5-HT4 receptor antagonists (e.g. SB204070) which, to this day, represent industry standards as the most potent drugs of their type.
