Content Director

Dec 2012 - Feb 2017
I led a team of writers and editors in content development for three websites. My role involved synthesizing information about search behavior, top-performing products, and areas of business opportunity to conceptualize and schedule written content, both day to day and long term. Under my guidance, Insureon began to demonstrate how insurance-related writing can be engaging and, yes, even funny. (An example, you say? Here's one: http://www.insureon.com/products/professional/liability/how-professional-liability-would-have-helped).Oh, and we also started to rank on Google's first page for our most important keywords. Online Content Writer (Freelance)
-
Jul 2011 - Dec 2012
I wrote and edited web content for small businesses, individuals, and professionals. This involved researching diverse subject matter and composing materials in clients' varied voices. At some point during my tenure there, the management switched from reputation.com to Sky Publishers, which I wasn't sure how to represent on here. Bottom line: I can write about anything, fast. Online Content Writer & Editor
-
Oct 2011 - Aug 2012
I started here as a freelancer and eventually worked full-time, though always remotely. I conceptualized, wrote, and edited all kinds of marketing materials (emails, landing pages, sales pages, blog posts, branding paragraphs, etc.). This position involved working primarily with very small service-based businesses, including "solopreneurs." I gained a lot of insight about the pain points and business practices for this sector of the economy, which (spoiler alert, unless you're reading top to bottom) really helps me at insureon. Fresh out of college, I put my English degree to use writing online marketing content for an attorney advertising database. This involved researching legal subject matter, processing it, and writing about it in consumer-friendly prose. It was here I learned about SEO and the Google algorithms that let us use the Internet in the way we do. What a revelation. I also edited colleagues' writing. At the dawn of my freelance career, I spent a summer editing student essays online. I mentally edit everything I read anyway, so it was nice to get paid to do it for a few months. English Instructor
-
Jan 2008 - Jan 2011
During grad school, I taught English (Composition I & II and Intro to Creative Writing). This position was one of my favorites because I got do extensive planning (lesson plans, curriculum overviews, reading lists(!!!)) and perform (while teaching, of course) while talking about writing and grammar. I even agreed to teach my fellow graduate instructors during the annual pre-semester workshop, leading sessions on preparing for the particular challenges of teaching composition to our student body. And because that wasn't quite enough for me, I also volunteered as part of the Saluki Writers' Project to teach creative writing to the students at Carbondale's Boys and Girls Club. Show less

Intern (Translation)

May 2006 - Jul 2006
Boy, was this one fun. In college, I told my chemistry classmates I wanted to be a "professional describer," and I pretty much got to do that in this role. I wrote (in French, mind you) descriptions of our clients' jewelry for catalogues, then translated them to English for the U.K. audience. (So, you know, I can do U.K. English, too, if necessary.) I also translated publicity documents and some online content and, in one particularly thrilling adventure, got to carry some yellow diamond earrings across Paris to the joaillier-créateur's (creative jeweler's) workshop after a photo shoot.
