Studying population genetics of Eastern Oysters used in a restoration project. This is a collaborative project with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. Our goals are to determine whether the restoration oysters are contributing to subsequent spawning events examining genetic markers. Deployed on commercial fishing vessels in the Gulf of Mexico and South Atlantic. Our coverage area is from Texas to North Carolina. My employer has a contract with NOAA through the Department of Commerce. I am sent to a vessel in which I will go to sea with a crew for anywhere from 1 to 45 days and maybe longer. Average trips are 14 days long. The laboratory I work with is based in Galveston, Texas and is responsible for shrimp and reef fishing vessels. I have worked on bottom otter trawl, pelagic and bottom longliners in addition to bandit reel and spearfishing boats. I characterize the catch and bycatch brought on board, which includes counting, weighing and sometimes measuring organisms. I was involved with special monitoring of seafood after the Deepwater Horizon incident in the summer of 2010. Additionally, I have worked on Turtle Excluder Device and Bycatch Reduction Device certifications for shrimp boats. Show less

I was the technician responsible for Killifish breeding colony. It is a small brackish water fish used in genetic studies at Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. I fed, cleaned tanks, changed water, collected eggs, and took care of the fry and eggs. The system had a volume of 5,000+ liters and was recirculating. In addition, I was an assistant to the primary technician and manager of a 64,000+ liter flow through system in which macroalgae was raised for feed stock of sea hares and production maximization experiments.
