  Interning for almost a year at a nonprofit news organization producing impactful coverage of Orange County’s local governments and quality of life. Often broke important and consequential stories in between classes while balancing work with school.Reported and wrote about various issues like public corruption, cultures of silence and retaliation in law enforcement, ousters of top city employees and embattled public officials, public safety, gentrification, housing, public land disputes, gerrymandering, elections, incarceration, and homelessness.Appeared on NPR’s SoCal station, KPCC, to discuss one of my stories out of the City of Irvine.Maintained beat notes. Gathered tips and scoops from a variety of sources across the county — ranging from senior public officials and city hall insiders to elected officials and community leaders — and gave editors the rundown of each at weekly staff meetings to hash out story ideas.Used sourcing skills to get inside the discussions and movements of complicated and embattled public agencies.Searched county court databases for civil litigation cases involving public agencies and cities, unearthing valuable documents and even sworn depositions of public officials that led to a series of stories on explosive corruption allegations leveled against the City of Santa Ana.Filed Public Records Act requests for records held by numerous public agencies, such as police officer misconduct records and city employee tort claims (and the subsequent settlements).Gained proficiency in reading city budgets, public meeting agendas, and campaign finance filings.
