As a Floor Hand for H&P I would perform rig up, down, and operating activities for 12 hours per day, for 14 consecutive days alternating my shift from day to nights each two-week hitch. These tasks would include operating the tongs, slips and spinner hawk to connect and disconnect drilling pipe, tubular and drilling bits or tools, and checking hoist lines and ropes for SALA blocks. Performing “nippling up or nippling down” of the blowout preventer system. This included the monitoring and operation of the shakers. Preforming general repairs and maintenance on major and minor rig components. Often myself and the other floor hand would rush between the rig floor and the mud house to assist the Derrickman with mud-mixing duties. This includes assisting within the mud pit, mud pump and chemical sack. Responsible for housekeeping activities on the drilling rig which included at a minimum washing, chipping and painting, also carrying out other helping tasks that would be assigned as needed such as running a loader to move equipment to and from its storing locations. I worked As Night Shift Security for Missoula Pre-Release Center for a while and my duties, included performing hourly head counts of 90+ residents, including facility security checks. I conducted urinalyses, breathalyzers, pat downs and would search personal property such as, purses, backpacks, store-bought items and luggage. Also, I was tasked with performing random search of houses and living locations on my own and would complete live-out spot checks on residents in their home, and at their work or out on passes. Daily I account for, documented, and administered residents’ medications. Monthly I would conduct maintenance and checks on facility fire extinguishers. Often during or at the end of my shift I would draft and issue statements, of violations, and investigation notices of residents in and out of the facility and provide supervisors and authorities with the correct documents. While working with Colvico I would, measure, cut, and bend wire and conduit, using measuring instruments and hand tools. Measure materials or objects for installation and assembly set forth by the journeymen. I Stripped insulation from wire ends, using wire stripping pliers, and attached wires to terminals for subsequent soldering or TIG welding. After all, above ground prep work was completed I would assist the Electrician with the install electrical components, equipment, and systems. I was tasked with Examining electrical units for loose connections and broken insulation and tighten connections, using hand tools. Inspect electrical or electronic systems for defects. One of my many daily duties included threading conduit ends, connect couplings, and fabricating and securing conduit support brackets, and install copper-clad ground rods, using a manual post driver and other tools for the job.I would transport tools, materials, equipment, and supplies to work site by hand, hand truck, or heavy, motorized truck.
