When I hired Brad, it was a real coup for Key Porter, and me. He was an integral part of every aspect of our sales & marketing department, and brought not only knowledge but also remarkable instincts. He was one of the most trusted and reliable colleagues, and was promoted very soon after he joined my team. I would work with him again, and I highly recommend Brad.

It is my pleasure to speak on behalf of Brad Kalbfleisch's work. As colleagues at Key Porter Books, Brad and I worked at what may seem like opposite ends of the publishing spectrum - myself in editorial, and Brad in sales. As anyone with publishing experience knows, however, the two functions are closely related. Editors rely on sales staff and managers to provide insight on acquisitions, feedback on manuscripts, and input on how best to position a book in the market. Brad was wonderfully helpful on all of these fronts. His knowledge of the industry is second to none, and he is an absolute pleasure to work with. His skills would be an asset to any publishing business.

Manager, Special & Corporate Market Sales US/Canada
-
Jul 2019 - Present
Special market sales can be key for a publisher—specialty retail, museum, online, catalogue, wholesaler, corporate gift, premium market, any and all. I work with accounts big and small, US and Canada, supporting and growing current business, resuscitating the dormant and finding the new. For larger accounts packaging, logistics and shipping detail are part of the picture as is managing our online presence and marketing. Custom books: I work with clients, our in house production and printers on all aspects of the project—specs, branding, approvals, delivery—we've produced branded editions for pharma, major US retail and international brands. In some cases custom is finding the right book for the right event, campaign or other purpose and working with the client on smaller branding. Show less

Sales and Marketing Manager/Director
-
Jan 1999 - May 2014
See below for individual employers and positions. My first love is books. Much of my career has been spent working in sales and marketing capacities for various Canadian independent publishers. My job has been to generate revenue while promoting books, the house, our writers including delivering custom publications for clients. I've handled national accounts in both Canada and the US and have worked with a national sales force in both markets. My responsibility has also included corporate clients across North America as well as foreign rights sales, working with partner publishers internationally to bring our books to other markets. From 2012-2014 I worked in a freelance capacity with Canadian publishers through Literary Press Group. During this time also as Sales & Marketing Manager for James Lorimer & Co. handling national accounts, library, representing the house at conferences including BEA and working with the editorial team on the program. Sales Manager, Publishing, Key Porter Books/Fenn Publishing
-
Dec 2009 - Feb 2011
My position was quite broad in scope—oversight of our US distributor for the trade market, foreign rights sales & contracts and working with national trade markets for Canada. I also worked with a team on Key Porter's e-book program. For the last several months of my time with HB Fenn/Key Porter I was a primary contact for authors and agents regarding contracts, rights reversions, remainders and sundry details pertaining to the closure of Key Porter Books and Fenn Publishing while trying to maintain revenue and visibility in both Canada and the US on key titles. Manager, Special Markets
-
2004 - 2008
As Manager, Special Markets, my role was to manage business in both Canada and the US, and some overseas markets, with accounts ranging from large national retailers to wholesalers, corporate and premium markets to custom editions, museum markets to non-profit. The account list was considerable particularly in the US. I was responsible for all aspects of account management: sales pitches, constant follow up, catalogue mailings, shipment logistics and special needs, working with production on shipping detail for overseas printings, direct mail campaigns and more. National Sales Manager/Director Sales
-
1999 - 2004
Key Porter Books was an exceptional opportunity for me. While my role was to manage all aspects of national accounts and to generate revenue, I was also given the opportunity to work closely with all other departments including the publishing board on futures; it was a perfect introduction to the industry. I worked with our field sales force offering guidance on sales and marketing ventures/co-op; coordinated special events; managed Key Porter's advertising, designing some of that advertising; coordinated seasonal catalogue design and production and more—at times a trial by fire but always supportive work experience.
