LIMA - When Brad Smith's dad floated an idea eight years ago for a mailbox styled as an oversized golf ball resting on a giant tee, Smith thought it sounded like a top-flight idea. He came up with a design and had a fiberglass prototype made, but he was finishing his business degree at Bluffton, running his own small candle business and didn't have time to go any further with the project. So the mailbox sat in his garage collecting dust for seven years before neighbor Derek Gesler encouraged him to go forward with the idea earlier this summer - though not when he first heard about it. "I thought it would be tacky," Gesler said. "A big golf ball along the side of the road would look ridiculous." After Smith showed Gesler the prototype that had collected dust in his garage for seven years, his neighbor changed his mind and told Smith he should swing away with the idea. Now the duo is teeing off with Mulligan Mailboxes, a company they formed to sell the boxes that feature a 20-inch diameter plastic golf ball - dimples and all - resting on a 3-foot-tall green tee. A molding company in Carey is producing the all-plastic boxes, which will sell for $199. For a little more, Mulligan Mailboxes will customize each box with the name and address of the homeowner or golf course in green lettering reminiscent of the font Titleist uses on its real golf balls. For now, Smith said he is relying on face-to-face sales, though a Web site is in the works and should be online by next weekend. With that, they'll be able to do marketing, advertising and take online orders. Still, the small-time company is taking a grassroots approach and planning to attend several local craft shows and golf shows. But the company that's largely just for fun still has quite the potential client list - Smith said there are more than 820 golf courses in Ohio and about 17,000 nationwide. They also hope to attract devoted golfers who want to add a little flair to their postal home delivery.
