Anywhere that pleases me Since leaving Microsoft, I've been surveying the technical landscape, getting my coding chops back, and incubating a startup idea or two. I am happy to say that things are moving along and it is hugely refreshing to be personally deep in the code again. I am happy to say that things are moving along and it is hugely refreshing to be personally deep in the code again. The end of Moore's Law is upon us just as mobile hardware is greatly expanding the opportunities to have complex devices in the field talking to equally complex services in the cloud. Traditional development practices, stacks, training were designed with ever increasing clock speeds in mind. The reality is that multi-core is now the standard and all developers must learn to write robust parallel code on both clients and servers. I'm very excited about the coding language Elixir, which is built on the venerable Erlang core tech and is perfectly suited to the challenge on both ends of the internet pipe. I'll be talking more about this soon and sharing some of the work I've been doing. Show less

Managed a budget in the high 10s of Millions of dollars. Xbox 360 is the #1 console of that generation, Kinect was the fastest selling consumer accessory an innovated user interaction and video game interfaces more than any other accessory. Helped ensure Xbox can update millions of boxes being used constantly through the day without interrupting service. This effort goes back to the first Xbox where I helped lay out the plan to update via Xbox Live. Played a large role designing and ensuring the software security of all the consoles (Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One). Was the first and most vocal person on the Xbox team championing anti-cheating technology (and more) to keep the games fun and fair - and the machines working.

General Manager - Advanced Media Project
-
2009 - Dec 2011
Redmond, WA Worked directly with Ray Ozzie (Chief Software Architect for Microsoft Corporation) on an advanced media project. Part of this shipped in TV services for Xbox One and SmartGlass. The rest is as yet unannounced. My work during this project, while still largely secret, was equally focused on technical design/strategy and business understanding/strategy.

General Manager - Xbox Developer Program
-
2008 - Aug 2009
Redmond, WA Owned XNA, and the Xbox XDK, certification, and developer support programs. Managed a team of 220+ people, and a (roughly) $100M budget. I owned the P&L for the XDK program, which covered the developer kits for Xbox 360, certification, and support. This was the year of the economic downturn and I spent much of my time focused on the finances and optimization of the team. This was the year of the economic downturn and I spent much of my time focused on the finances and optimization of the team. While many other teams around me shrank and faced layoffs, I was able to optimize our impact on customers and even grow the business. I also recognized the needs of the (new/small) Kinect project and re-organized the team to ensure it had the resources it needed to succeed. These efforts exceeded the business expectations both technically and financially.

Product/General Manager - XNA
-
Aug 2004 - Aug 2008
Redmond, WA Owned XNA Game Studio from its inception through the successful launch of 3 major releases. I set the vision/strategy (in 2004) that predicted the pent-up demand of independent game developers and built the first open marketplace on a console. I lead a strategy to encourage more students into the Computer Sciences by opening up the Xbox and using it in schools around the planet. I lead a strategy to encourage more students into the Computer Sciences by opening up the Xbox and using it in schools around the planet. I also designed and implemented a strong engineering philosophy where developers were heavily responsible for quality, test wrote games (end-to-end testing the same way a customer would do it) and Program Managers focused on the problems our customers faced. It was critical that we only build what was actually valuable to game developers, and not all the minor bells and whistles. External face of XNA. Personally drove discussions with game development shops and gave talks around the world including, GDC, Gamefest, FMX (Germany) and CEDEC (Japan).
