As a consult for IAC, I developed and implement a curriculum for a 3-day training to support staff from agencies providing services to adults with developmental disabilities. Staff are trained in the history of Travel Training and the disabilities rights movement, the importance of advocacy, both in teaching self-advocacy and our role as advocates working within the field. The training also covers useful teaching techniques to be used when supporting an individual with a developmental disability in learning how to travel independently for the first time. Emphasis is placed on the dignity of risk, the importance of safety, and how to teach problem solving skills.

As the Travel Trainer for Adult Day Services at AHRC, I oversaw a program that teaches adults with developmental disabilities how to travel independently within the New York City public transportation system. I was responsible for training and supervising close to 80 direct support staff members from all 5 boroughs providing travel training services. Additionally, I served as a quality assurance agent, assessing the skills of all individuals receiving support throughout the travel training process. I found myself wearing many hats in this position, as many of us do working within nonprofit organizations. In addition to overseeing our travel training program, I was very dedicated to the self-advocacy movement and was actively involved in strong advocacy groups within our day habitation programs. I also had the pleasure of working with students in our ongoing Service Learning Partnership between AHRC and Pace University, providing collaborative services and bridging the AHRC and Pace communities. The creative side of me was happy to provide services as a "Tracker" for Artists Realization Technologies (A.R.T.), a creative painting program designed for artists who do not have articulate use of their hands and limited verbal skills. In addition to supporting A.R.T., I was often involved in exhibiting art created by artists attending our programs, and helping with logistics for other events like concerts for the musicians at AHRC to share their passion and hard work.
