Voluntary Consultant (Strategic ICT Advisor)
-
Jul 2019 - Present
Having worked in the public sector all my career and gaining valuable strategic knowledge, I felt it was the best time to become a Strategic ICT Advisor/Consultant. In future-proofing my models and methodologies, I have volunteered my services to CHIETA to gain the necessary stamp of approval for being an experienced consultant. My role with CHIETA is to provide advice and recommendations, based on my ICT strategic management expertise and experience, to address organisational needs and provide support for the implementation of any agreed solutions. Through Innovation, I can recognise and exploit business opportunities offered by information and communication technology, best practices, methods and standards. These practices ensure the efficient and effective performance of the organisation, to explore possibilities for new ways of conducting business and organisational processes that establish new services or activities. I develop these innovate ideas for IT departments through the creation, iteration and maintenance of a well-designed strategy to align IT plans with business objectives and the development of plans to drive forward and execute that strategy. Working with stakeholders to communicate and embed strategic management via goals, accountabilities and monitoring of progress, we are able then to drive IT policy and planning to achieve success using programme management methodologies. My role then moves into the identification, planning and coordination of a set of related projects within a programme of business change, to manage their interdependencies in support of specific business strategies and objectives. Additionally, maintaining a strategic view over the set of projects, providing the framework for implementing business initiatives, or large-scale change, by conceiving, managing and communicating a vision of the outcome of the programme and associated benefits. My job was to facilitate the creation, iteration and maintenance of a strategy to align IT plans with business objectives and the development of these plans to drive forward and execute that strategy. I did this job by creating and maintaining structures such as enterprise and business architectures which embodied the fundamental principles, methods and models that described the Sefako Makgatho Health Science University future state, and that enables its evolution. Typically this involved the interpretation of business goals and drivers through the translation of business strategy and objectives into an operating model and the strategic assessment of current capabilities. Through the identification, analysis, management and monitoring of relationships with and between stakeholders, I was able to establish the clarification of mutual needs and commitments through consultation and consideration of impacts. Which helped me then establish the IT governance to have oversight of the organisation's approach to the use of information, digital services and associated technology, which includes responsibility for the provision of digital services. They were allowing me to manage the levels of service and service quality which met current and future business requirements and develop policies and practices for conformance with mandatory legislation and regulations to be able to implement strategic plans for the technology to enable the organisation's business strategy. The governance framework created transparent decision making, leading to a justification for investment, with appropriate balance between stakeholder benefits, opportunities, costs, and risks. Once this framework was in place, I was able to have then overall financial management, control and stewardship of the IT assets and resources used in the provision of IT services, including the identification of materials and energy costs, ensuring compliance with all governance, legal and regulatory requirements.
