Bob and I both serve on the executive council of a professional organization, the Pacific Chapter of the American Association for Public Opinion Research. The council positions are all volunteer. Bob was president in 2012 and really breathed new life into the organization. He is a natural leader who thought strategically about the direction and role of the organization. He initiated a new annual short course event in Los Angeles to reach our Southern California members and reached out to other regional chapters to share ideas. As president, you could trust Bob to be organized, deliberative, decisive, and thoughtful (and he never let council members’ efforts go unacknowledged). He remains the first to volunteer to help on subcommittees. He is also funny and makes the work more fun. I doubt I am alone in saying he will be missed on the council after he serves his final term as past president this year.

Bob has served on the PAPOR board since January 2009, including serving the president track from 2011-2013. Bob currently serves as Councilor at Large in charge of short course education.PAPOR is a regional chapter of AAPOR, the American Association for Public Opinion Research (www.aapor.org). For several decades, we have been a group of academics, product vendors, market researchers, journalists, and other researchers who have all shared an interest in figuring out what the public thinks and how they behave. We have looked at public opinion and behavior in many different ways: how people evaluate candidates for public office, whether and how people vote, what they want governments to do or not do, and how they live their lives in ways that impact the rest of us, for example, their health behavior. We also talk about how we can do a better job at designing our studies, measuring opinions and behaviors, and analyzing and presenting the results of our research. Our main activity is our Annual Conference in December, where people get to present the results of their research. We also host a short course, intended to give our participants new skills for study design, analysis or presentation, or just to update their old skills. We are a very welcoming and congenial group, and the Sir Francis Drake Hotel in Union Square, San Francisco, is a great spot to meet us, discuss, debate and network.
