PhD candidate at INSA Lyon - Fluid Mechanics and Acoustics Laboratory (LMFA) (cotutelle programme with Coventry University - Centre for Fluid and Complex Systems). Research focuses on the stability of three-dimensional acoustically-driven flows by combining numerical and experimental approaches. Teaching assistant in Physics (first year) and Fluid Mechanics (third year). Mechanical engineering placement at Volvo Group Trucks Technology in Saint-Priest (France) as part of my last year at INSA Lyon. The following tasks were carried out: - Design of external gears & epicyclic gear trains (spur and helical): determined optimum geometrical characteristics of gears (module, number of teeth, profile shift coefficients, addendum and dedendum coefficients, pressure and helix angles, tip radius of rack cutter) in order to sustain loads at a target gear ratio and under tight packaging constraints. A model based on the ISO 6336 standard was developed to estimate contact and bending stresses on both driven and driving wheels, as well as to predict gear efficiency for a considered load case. This model was designed to be able to simulate large duty cycles (several hundreds of thousands of load cases) within a few seconds and total gear damages (in terms of bending and pitting) were evaluated. - Preliminary design of a cooling unit : creation of a 1D MATLAB model to assess and improve thermal performances of the studied powertrain in both steady-state and transient conditions. Plate Heat Exchanger (PHE) models have been developed, benchmarked against experimental/manufacturer data and incorporated in the thermal model. Additional cooling due to forced and natural convection through the casing has been considered, resulting in the implementation of a non-linear solver to determine temperature changes and heat fluxes. Design of experiments were used to assess the influence of the design choices (PHE geometry, fins on casing, coolant flow rate, etc.) and to identify key design areas to prioritise. Show less
