For my Master Research Project, I researched the road verges of the municipality of Alphen aan den Rijn. I focussed on flower and pollinator diversity alongside roads. Road verges are a highly abundant nature-type within the urban environments, which could potentially be very important for the pollinator population. My job within this research project was to investigate the already existing biodiversity in the road verges and explain the possible differences between them. Show less

NOx pollution is a large problem in cities. The nitrogen oxides are mainly caused by traffic which is highly abundant in urban areas. Since trees are often present alongside roads, they could influence the concentration of NOx on these roads. Trees can take up NOx, which might reduce the concentration. But they can also hinder the airflow in the streets because of the possible green tunnel effect. In literature, the effect of trees on the concentration of NOx is not clear. This research aims to investigate the effects of trees on the traffic-derived concentration of NOx in urban areas. With already obtained data by others on NO2 concentrations, existing trees and traffic intensity, the effect is investigated at multiple locations in Den Haag. The possible effects of the number of trees, the trunk diameter, the species richness, and the species diversity are researched. The results indicate that the number of trees and the dominant diameter group present at a location do not significantly affect the concentration of NO2. The species richness and species diversity do have a significant effect. There is no interaction found between the tree-related variables and the traffic intensity, meaning the effects of the variables do not depend on the traffic intensity. Show less
