Billy and I both worked together as Research Assistants for Operation Wallacea in South Africa for a 4 week duration. Everyday he worked hard in the field and often stepped up to help within the team. For example, he sorted through a large amount of vegetation data we had collected within a 3 week period to ensure that the data was consistent and filled in anything that was missing. He also offered to write a blog post for the Opwall website. Billy is both a great field biologist, team player and he has excellent potential for a career in research.

I volunteered as a Classroom Assistant for a period of 2 weeks during the winter semester break of my MSc. I assisted primarily in GCSE and A-Level Science lessons but occasionally helped in GCSE English and Mathematics lessons. I supported student learning by aiding students with lesson tasks, experiments and content. Alongside this role I observed teaching strategies and management tailored towards an age group of 13-19. The duties involve managing small groups of staff to ensure tasks are evenly distributed, being attentive to customers, preparing for deliveries and receiving telephone enquiries. I became a trusted member of staff who occasionally had the responsibility of opening the public house and closing in the evenings, a role that required a high level of commitment and trust. I volunteered as a research assistant, for a period of 1 month, focusing on large mammal and fynbos biodiversity research. This voluntary role was both exhilarating and educational in which I performed extensive research on the impact that large mammals have on the Cape Floral Kingdom, with a particular emphasis on the damage caused to the fynbos biome. During this role I assisted conservational researchers in their scientific research and participated in a myriad of physically demanding roles. I was specifically involved in the data collection and the data entry of vegetation surveys, bird counts and game transects. Roles also included observational studies regarding elephant foraging, and collection of elephant dung in order to monitor their stress levels in the South African drought. In addition to my research role, I also completed an advanced African wildlife conservation and management course, provided by Wildlife Ecological Investments. A 2-week work experience placement where I acted as a classroom assistant. I supervised organised play, and simple reading and writing tasks. I assisted students with comprehension tasks, guided reading and one-to-one reading where reading ability and comprehension was assessed.
