While assigned to MOTU 12, I was responsible for providing technical assistance to Mayport-based ships on a number of radar, navigation, and communications systems. After budget cuts forced a severe reduction in contractor support personnel, I assumed responsibility for conducting quarterly one-week training classes on the maintenance and repair of AN/URT-23 and -24 HF transmitters, AN/URR-1051 HF receivers, and AN/URA-38 antenna couplers. I was also a primary technical lead for AN/SRN-15 TACAN and AN/SRN-19 SATNAV (the predecessor to GPS). After over two years of exemplary performance, I was a deep selectee (chosen for early promotion) to CPO/E7.
