I acted as a teaching and research assistant to Dr. James Conder and Professor Lea Gilbertson at SIU, Carbondale. I taught the lab portions of structural geology and physical sciences classes for future k-12 educators. Geophysics research related to ray theory conducted via programming (Matlab). Thesis research topic was the development of a new ray-tracing algorithm to optimize A to B teleseismic paths.

Multi-Hazard Mitigation Planner

Drafted Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plans (MHMP) pursuant to FEMA DMA 2000. This included environmental analysis of earthquake, sinkhole/subsidence, flood, tornado, meteorological, and chemical spill/plume hazard. Analytics were conducted via Geographic Information Systems (GIS), FEMA's Hazus and Cameo's ALOHA software. Relevant parcel data was obtained via the county surveyor's office and financial loss was calculated due to hypothetical catastrophic natural disaster. I worked as an environmental health & safety (EHS) and industrial hygiene (IH) technician at a small firm in White Bear Lake, Minnesota. This role was broad and included a wide variety of projects, including (but not limited to): asbestos abatement oversight and air monitoring, indoor air quality monitoring, soil sampling, air sampling, noise sampling, lead abatement, hazardous waste characterization, encampment remediation, ESA Phase I, pre/post demolition building surveys, material sampling, and others. Research role: Investigated airborne fibrous mineral breakthrough through traditional IH air monitoring cassettes. Constructed containment room for investigation of aerosol asbestos concentrated and breakthrough. Researched asbestos vitrification as a potential process for hazardous waste disposal.
