I teach the Basic Photojournalist Course-Air Force taught at Fort Meade, Md. During this 87-academic-day course, I teach students fundamentals of newswriting, photography and public affairs in preparation for their careers as Air Force public affairs specialists. The student products are used in social media as well as print outlets. I have taught this and a related course (online and in-residence) for military public affairs specialists since October 2003.I teach in small-group (9-12 students) and large-group (18-48 students) settings. I also provide one-on-one coaching and feedback for more in-depth assignments, such as news stories, social media, human-interest features and personality features. The face-to-face, one-on-one instruction and interaction with students is the favorite aspect of my career and just one area I am most effective in.Within the next 18 months, I plan to complete my Master's of Arts in Teaching. After that, I plan to pursue another post-graduate degree in creative writing. Within the next five years, I plan to have both degrees completed, have hiked at least part of the Appalachian Trail and have published at least two or three short stories (I have rough drafts of two short children's stories completed). I am also interested in conducting tutoring in the areas of grammar and composition writing for children and young adults.Onechallenges I am currently meeting is learning how to integrate social media both into what and how I communicate lessons with my students, and into my own brand. I am also learning more advanced electronic teaching tools such as Prezi, and I am taking courses related to my occupation through lynda.comAlthough I have held several supervisory positions in the past, I am most productive, effective and content in working in "front-line" capacity where I can have the greatest influence on students. I provide thoughtful, honest and constructive feedback to students and supervisors alike.
