Senior Biologist/Environmental Scientist

Jan 1995 - Aug 2011
In 1995, I rejoined Teck. in Trail as the staff Biologist designing and overseeing receiving environmental monitoring programs including the Columbia River Integrated Environmental Monitoring Program (CRIEMP) and an air biomonitoring program using lichen. I was heavily involved and instrumental in obtaining the Project Approval Certificate for the Waneta Dam Upgrade Project. I represented Teck’s interests to government agencies (federal, provincial and municipal), numerous special stakeholders and the general public. In 1998 as the Senior Biologist, I was the technical manager of a multiyear Wide Area Ecological Risk Assessment of the area surrounding the Trail Smelter. This $1.2 million per year project has brought together numerous consultants and research scientists to tackle this challenging project. The project is one of the largest in North America and has set the standards for other such projects in Canada and the U.S. As a MAC representative on several major federal regulatory initiatives including AQUAMIN, AETE and MMEEM, it was necessary to balance the mining industry’s needs while providing adequate protection to the environment in a regulatory framework. I was active in the “Scientists & Innovators in the Schools” program doing numerous presentations in schools, from the elementary to community college level. Played a strategic role in several innovative projects at Trail Operations, including the use of Celgar bio-solids as a soil amendment for remediation of Trail soils, a pilot wetlands to treat metal-contaminated water and land-based field trials of phytoremediation to remove metals from Trail soils. My PhD at University of Victoria in Earth and Ocean Sciences was completed while working at Teck. Show less
