  Milwaukee County House of Correction After spending a year and several months at CCI, a maximum security prison, I decided to try working at a jail. The setting is similar, and also very different than the prison setting. Nurse staffing ratios are similar. Not enough nurses to do everything needed. Seems that is a common problem in corrections. HOC houses over 1500 male and female inmates. Nurses have multiple opportunities to educate our patients. I work night shift and spread my time between booking, clinic, sick call, emergencies and paperwork. Never a dull moment. I hope to renew my contract and remain here for awhile. Nurses have so many ways to touch our patients lives, even in a corrections setting. The work is hard, but extremely rewarding.

  Extremely disappointed with the corporation that owns this facility. The facility has since gone through many administrative and corporate changes which were needed. When a corporate nurse uses intimidation as a leadership style, the results are just what happened here--loss of good employees, lack of income, no teamwork and complete meltdown. Have you ever heard of a regional nurse being banned from a building? Where is corporate oversight. Not surpring this facility and others in the area have suffered.

  Home care of psychiatric patients and medical cases from Kentucky border to Murphreesboro, TN. Typical day included 200+ driving miles and 4-7 patients. Days began early in am and ended between 8 and 9pm followed by hours of paperwork. Unfortunately, as the second psych nurse, territory expanded multple counties. Visits included oasis paperwork on computer as well as case management. Every other weekend on call as well as fill in for medical cases.
