Ithaca, New York Area I am currently working on three projects; 1) engineering micro-scale array of habitats for investigating environmental factors affecting cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms; 2) transport and migration behavior of Shewanella sp. for bioelectrochemical systems; and 3) 3D in vitro models for breast tumor chemoinvasion.

I am currently working on a cancer motility and invasion study under well-defined chemical microenvironments (Physical Sciences – Oncology Center, funded by the NCI through the NIH). With a hypothesis that chemokines, utilized for immune cell trafficking, are also used by malignant breast cancers (MDA-MB-231) for their directionality, a stable gradient of the chemokines over the cell culture chamber was established, and the cell motility was analyzed. Our quantitative results reveal the… Show more I am currently working on a cancer motility and invasion study under well-defined chemical microenvironments (Physical Sciences – Oncology Center, funded by the NCI through the NIH). Our quantitative results reveal the importance of complex effects of multiple chemokines and growth factors within the tumor microenvironments

I am working on the project about development of a bioprocess on a chip. I have developed a miniaturized bioreactor for animal cell cultures producing therapeutic proteins and compared cell growth, viability and target protein producion to those in conventional methods such as spinner flasks. The minibioreactor provides a superior environment, resulting in better oxygen transfer, viability, specific growth rate, and target protein production (two-fold). The minibioreactor provides a superior environment, resulting in better oxygen transfer, viability, specific growth rate, and target protein production (two-fold). Other culture modes such as fed-batch and perfusion have been studied, too. Product assessment units will be designed and integrated with the minibioreactor.

I have worked on the environmental effect on the cell growth and virulence factor induction with Pseudomonas syrinage pv. tomato DC3000 in hrp-inducing minimal medium. I found that iron is the growth limiting nutrient and is involved in the virulence induction with chemostat cultures. The results were recently published in the Applied and Environmental Microbiology.
